An SME had shown consistent and sustained growth over the last 6 years of trading. The two Directors and Joint Owners had decided that any further sustainable growth would need what they termed a stepped approach. In other words they wanted to take their Company to the next level and that meant engaging with Clients who themselves were at a different level and size to those they were used to.
One of the essential ingredients to this step up was to gain certification to standards that appeared to be pre-conditions to tender at this next level. In particular recognised Quality and Health and Safety Standards were simply a must.
The DIY approach was embarked upon with no semblance of success. Indeed the stop/start approach (they reminded us they had a business to run) was frustrating in the extreme. In short they needed ISO help. The client decided to hand the whole task over to us, with the requirement that Certification to 3 standards was achieved by the end of the year.
Our approach was to carry out some due diligence to size the task in hand. Having completed this within a week, we put forward a proposal with a considered timeline and a list of priorities for their consideration. The response was positive and off we trotted on our quest to bridge the gaps.
Again, and as with all projects we undertake (Prince2 methodologies) regular updates were given. Indeed, very early on into the project we put forward a recommendation that an integrated set of certifications with a restructure at Board Level to accommodate this seed change, would prove more efficient, easier for all stakeholders to understand and buy into, and cheaper.
The two Directors took on board the recommendation and all 3 certifications were achieved on time, to cost and been embraced by all within the company.
